How to properly wash your hair
As a hairstylist in the industry for 10 years, one thing that still gets me by surprise is the amount of people who do not know how to properly wash their hair and scalp.
Dandruff and other scalp conditions due to improper cleansing can lead to thinning hair ...I mentioned this in my “Dandruff vs Dry Scalp” post.
Now I am talking about good old fashion cleanliness of their hair and scalp...there’s a method to the madness.
This goes for men and women.
Everyone is different-we all have different lifestyles, sebaceous glands, hair texture, etc.
These are just some general steps on proper cleansing of the hair & scalp:
- Rinse hair with warm water
- Apply shampoo directly to SCALP, not hair. You want to exfoliate the dead skin on your head.
- Rinse out the first shampoo, and guess what? REPEAT THAT STEP. Step one is a prep, step 2 gets all the funky stuff out.
- Apply conditioner starting from the mid shaft / ends of your hair, and work your way to the top. Try to focus on the ends of the hair while conditioning. Your natural oils will moisturize your scalp, but the longer your hair is, the more shit it’s been through so that hair needs lots of love and conditioner. Your hair also needs more love if you’re a curly girl or if you have chemically processed hair I recommend to leave the conditioner on for a few minutes. If you have dry scalp, work that conditioner into the scalp. If you tend to have an oily scalp, skip out on saturating your roots with conditioner.
- Rinse conditoner out thoroughly with cooler water. Doesn’t have to be cold water, but cooler water helps to seal your cuticle.
- Enjoy your fresh hair and scalp!
I HIGHLY recommend avoiding the following ingredients in shampoos or conditioners:
Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS)
cocomide MEA
silicone (it’s literally like putting plastic in your hair)
Dimethicone
Paraben
Happy hair washing! 💕
