Summer hair care

Summer hair care

Summer means lots of fun in the sun and playing in the ocean or pool. On the PH scale, salt and pool water are high in alkaline which means it opens the cuticles in your hair and causes it to feel dry.

Before going in the sun we are conditioned to always put sunscreen to protect our skin,  but we’re not really warned about protecting our hair.

Your hair is like Spongebob and the minute you jump into water with dry hair, you will absorb all of the chemicals and minerals into your hair. Chlorine, copper, salt, all that good stuff that makes your hair feel rough, and can even turn it green.

Protect yo’ hair!

You want to use a leave in cream or spray in your hair to protect it, not only from the sun but the water too.

Using an oil that works as a thermal protector will also help keep your hair look smooth and shiny, while creating a prodective shield on the cuticle.

A leave in cream balances out the PH levels of the hair. Apply the leave in cream when the hair is wet  BEFORE going to spend the day in the water and sun.

My hands down , absolute favorite leave in creams:

  • GK Leave In cream

  • Incredible Milk Shake 12 effects spray

  • Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint leave in spray.

I also love using serums to keep in my hair, especially if I will be in the sun or water.

Another tip for protecting your hair:

this is especially for my curly girls....

The night before going to the beach or pool leave a conditioner or masque in your hair and do NOT rinse it out. Leave it in overnight, and when you jump into water it will create a protective shield and moisturize your hair so you won’t feel like a rats nest. Your curls will be soooo happy!

My favorite hair masque:

  • Melt into Moisture by Deva Curl

  • Moisture Masque by Framesi

Why does hair turn green when going into the pool or lake water?

Well, due to high concentrations levels of copper in the water, the copper binds to the hair shaft causing it to turn green. Reminder: the Statue of Liberty was originally copper and look how green she is now thanks to copper oxidation. 🗽

What to do if your hair turns green?

Have no fear Jess is here ! ( in spirit )

Okay I’m going to try to esplain this in layman’s terms...

So on a PH scale 1 being acidic and 14 being alkaline, pool water that contains high levels of chlorine is high in alkaline which opens the hairs cuticle. Acid closes it, so when your green hair is all open with its cuticles exposed...using an acid base like Apple Cider Vinegar or ketchup does the job. It night not smell the greatest, but at least you won’t have green hair! One that does smell good is strawberries ...so if you can get your hands on a bowl of those that should help! This is a quick fix that comes in handy if you can’t reach a salon.

p.s don’t blame your colorist, the lighter you are the more likely your hair is open to absorbing all the fun stuff. Protect your hair, use purple shampoo and you will be fine 😘
